This site is intended to be a resource for the CalArts community to find information about unionization at the Institute. CalArts supports a fair, transparent, and neutral process that ensures its employees have the information they need to make informed choices about this important process.
The Institute respects its employees’ right to organize, and is committed to maintaining a supportive, creative, and collaborative teaching, learning, and working environment for all members of our community. CalArts does not have an opinion for or against unionization, and believes our employees have the right to freely determine for themselves whether or not they think union representation would be beneficial.

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) set the dates to conduct a secret-ballot election for employees in three bargaining units to determine whether they would like CalArts United-United Auto Workers (“UAW”) to be their exclusive bargaining representative.

Progress update
Over the past several weeks, CalArts and CalArts United-UAW have continued productive discussions regarding the scope of the employee groups, or units, the union seeks to represent, and have reached agreement on many points.
