CalArts and the CU-UAW met on Aug. 4 and discussed CalArts’ July 15 proposal for reductions and the union’s counter proposals, submitted just prior to the meeting.

In a July 29 meeting, the Institute and the union discussed CalArts’ proposed criteria for layoffs, a second voluntary program for faculty, additional bargaining dates, and “ground rules” for contract negotiations.

Topics include an additional voluntary plan for eligible faculty and the elimination of some staff positions, including management positions.

CalArts accepted the first date proposed by UA-UAW to begin bargaining, and shared a draft proposal for how to structure negotiations.

The new, three-year collective bargaining agreement will become effective upon ratification by CWA members.

Both parties will select the arbitrator; submit evidence for consideration, including briefs; and likely further litigate any remaining issues at a hearing before the selected arbitrator.
