July 23: CalArts and CU-UAW’s Consolidated Bargaining Session

The parties reached tentative agreement on: (1) Leaves, (2) Professional Development, and (3) Release Time.

CU-UAW presented a package proposal covering (1) Grievance and Arbitration for staff and faculty, (2) No Strike, No Lockout for faculty, (3) CalArts Union Access, and (4) Union Security.

CalArts also presented proposals on (1) Duration (3 years), and (3) New Technology, along with a package that included (4) Retirement and (5) Health Benefits.

During the discussion of New Technology, CalArts explained that it is premature to enter into any agreements on AI as it is entirely unclear what affect, if any, it will have on higher education during the duration of this new contract. Accordingly, CalArts offered an article which provided that it would bargain over effects of any AI implementation that would impact jobs, and to establish a joint labor-management AI committee. CalArts reiterated it has no AI plans, nor does it foresee having such plans necessarily, where AI would replace any workers’ job.

On Retirement, CalArts offered to hold its current plan contribution rates and plan. On Healthcare, CalArts offered to hold its current plans through March 28, 2028, and offered $30,000 in a healthcare emergency fund for use for those employees on the Imagine360 1000 plan, etc.

The session concluded with the parties scheduling the remaining bargaining sessions the following week.
