CalArts and CU-UAW met for two hours on Monday, Aug. 4 to discuss CalArts’ proposed criteria for staff reductions and a voluntary, phased reduction in teaching for eligible faculty, which were first presented to the union on July 15. CalArts provided a proposed meeting agenda on August 1, and invited the union to submit additional items. The union did not provide any advance agenda items, but submitted a set of counter proposals an hour before the meeting. Although this did not enable the Institute to review the counter proposals ahead of time, the CalArts team appeared and responded to the proposals in good faith, providing its rationale for its position. The parties engaged in a robust discussion.
The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 6.
