Union Election Results Announced

Today, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) counted votes to determine whether employees in the 1) Regular and Technical Faculty unit, 2) Special Faculty unit, and 3) Staff unit, elected to be unionized. The election outcome was determined by ballots cast by eligible voters, with at least 50 percent plus one of the total ballots cast prevailing.

The Regular and Technical Faculty unit elected to unionize. For the Regular and Technical Faculty unit, of the about 159 eligible voters, 106 cast a vote with 95 voting yes and 11 voting no. There remain about 29 challenges (not presently included in eligible vote count).

The Special Faculty unit elected to unionize. For the Special Faculty unit, of the about 210 eligible voters, 127 cast a vote with 126 voting yes and 1 voting no. There remain about 7 challenges (not presently included in eligible vote count).

The Staff unit elected to unionize. For the Staff unit, of the about 247 eligible voters, 157 cast a vote with 137 voting yes and 20 voting no. There remain about 36 challenges (not presently included in eligible vote count).

CalArts is committed to engaging in collective bargaining in good faith with each unit for a first contract. Please note that the determination on the challenged ballots has not been made and will be determined at a later date, either resolved between the parties or by the NLRB, or both. For more see here. While the challenged ballots would not change the outcome of the elections and therefore need not be counted, it will still need to be determined whether or not those positions are included in their respective bargaining units.
