Progress update

Over the past several weeks, CalArts and CalArts United-UAW have continued productive discussions regarding the scope of the employee groups, or units, the union seeks to represent, and have reached agreement on many points. All of the agreements outlined below are tentative, and are subject to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB)’s rules, regulations, and processes.

At this juncture, CalArts and the union have agreed that there should be three separate units who will vote in a forthcoming union election: 1) regular and technical faculty, 2) special faculty, and 3) staff. A limited number of challenges remain regarding whether or not certain positions should be considered supervisory, which the two parties agree should be resolved according to the NLRB.

CalArts and the union have also reached a tentative agreement regarding the method and timing of the union election, which will be conducted by the NLRB.

As discussed in the information sessions, all eligible voters/employees in the three units should plan to vote in the upcoming election. An election to certify a union is decided by a simple majority of the votes cast by eligible voters; therefore, it is important that all eligible voters cast a vote. The NLRB will determine voter eligibility, and more information will be provided at that time.

Once the union files its petitions for representation elections for the three units and we receive further guidance from the NLRB, including the election dates, we’ll provide more detailed information.
