July 24: CalArts and CU-UAW Met to Continue Bargaining for Both Faculty Units

The parties reached tentative agreements on the (1) Workspace and Materials for Regular/Technical Faculty, (2) Workspace and Materials for Special Faculty, and (3) Discipline and Dismissal for Special Faculty.

CalArts also made a counterproposals on (1) Intellectual Property for all faculty. CU-UAW made counterproposals on (1) Appointments/Reappointment for Regular/Technical Faculty, (2) Compensation for Regular and Technical Faculty, (3) Compensation for Special Faculty, and (4) Discipline and Dismissal for Regular/Technical Faculty.

On Intellectual Property, CalArts’ counter clarifies IP treatment for individual works of authorship, creators’ ability to reference their own work for non-commercial purposes, and use of pedagogical materials such as trainings and faculty development resources—including confirming that a faculty member who creates such materials retains the right to use them after leaving CalArts.

For Regular/Technical Faculty Compensation, CU-UAW’s counter proposes eliminating the lowest five salary steps, a 5% wage increase, an increase to Academic Council stipends, and a one-time signing bonus.

On Academic Freedom, CalArts indicated it will bring a draft proposal to the next session about maintaining the status quo and convening a committee—including representatives from the Academic Council and Deans’ Council—to meet over the course of this academic year to develop the academic freedom policy.
