Staff Bargaining Unit Session: June 17

CU-UAW and CalArts met on June 17, 2026, for a session with the staff unit and a separate session with both faculty units.

During the staff session, the parties signed tentative agreements on (1) Performance Review, (2) Vacation, and (3) Discipline and Dismissal.

CU-UAW presented revised proposals on (1) Tuition Benefits and Loan Assistance and (2) Professional Development. In the Tuition Benefits and Loan Assistance article, CU-UAW proposed a student loan benefit for CalArts alumnx, while the Professional Development article proposed greater funding and the inclusion of creative practice for staff.

CalArts presented revised proposals on (1) Probation and (2) Layoffs. The Probation article proposes a timeframe in which new employees may be released during an introductory period without the requirement of cause. A proper timeframe is key to ensure employees have an opportunity to receive initial feedback and potentially adjust. In the Layoff article, the parties engaged in a discussion about potential recall opportunities in such a situation, among other things.
