CalArts and CU-UAW meet for fourth consolidated bargaining session

The CalArts and CU-UAW bargaining teams met today (Nov. 12) for their fourth session of consolidated bargaining. The parties continued their discussion on the scope of the staff bargaining unit.  The Union provided its updated proposal on Health and Safety and Job Postings.  The parties further discussed CalArts’ proposal on Policies and Procedures, which the Union had requested additional information about and which CalArts provided prior to the start of the session.

CalArts proposed updated counterproposals to Parking and Transit, Orientations, Union-Management Committee, Union Access, and Union Security. CalArts also provided its counterproposal to the Union’s Nondiscrimination in Employment proposal, which was discussed at length. In conjunction with that proposal, CalArts discussed with the Union making the EEO policies found in the Staff Handbook Institute-wide, along with the Standard of Professional Conduct found in the Staff Handbook as appropriate workplace behavior was encompassed in the Union’s original proposal on Nondiscrimination in Employment.

CalArts also provided a new proposal on Temporary Employees for Staff which allows temporary employees to become bargaining unit members after a certain threshold time and hours requirement is met. Temporary employees are not part of the bargaining units certified by the NLRB. As a general matter, expanding the scope of the bargaining units to add classifications that are not part of the NLRB’s unit certifications is not a mandatory subject of bargaining. However, as a demonstration of good faith, CalArts has provided a proposal on this topic.
